Plant Cell Biology - C. Sánchez-Rodríguez

The Plant Cell Biology group moved to the CBGP (Madrid) with the support of an ERC-Consolidator Grant (DYNWALL) and renamed to “external pagePlant Cell Biology of Plant Resilience (CBPR)”.

We aim to understand the mechanistic and molecular basis of plant resilience with a cellular perspective using advanced light microscopy, proteomics, biochemistry, molecular biology, and genetics. We are interested in a wide range of cellular responses that determine plant resilience to various environmental inputs, but our current main objective is to contribute solid knowledge to the biological function of the plant cell wall in response to root vascular fungi.

Our work is based on the development and application of new tools that expand opportunities to visualize apoplast changes and plant responses to cellular resolution during plant-microbe interaction and in response to other stresses. The present and future research objective of my group focuses on bringing solid knowledge on the biological function of the CW in plant resilience, focusing on response to root vascular fungi and water stress. More specifically, our main lines of research for the next years are: (1) Study of the dynamic remodeling of the plant CW during plant-microorganism interaction and its role in plant resilience to biotic stress. (2) Identification of the molecular bases of the capacity for entry and growth of vascular pathogens in the xylem. (3) Identification and characterization of the molecular basis of plant response to abiotic stress focused on the CW. (4) Biotechnology transfer. We firmly believe that the information we obtain from our work will be valuable to the society both at a fundamental level and for its biotechnological potential.

Our research has always been based on scientific curiosity and creativity, which has made us face several technical and conceptual challenges, some of the latter derived from an excessive generalization of knowledge in the scientific community. At the same time, we are very conscious of our commitment to society, to which we must provide solid knowledge that helps to achieve food safety and ecological stability worldwide.
